La Sierra del Brezo

El día en Cantabria estaba cubierto, así que nos dirigimos a la Montaña Palentina; cogimos un sendero detrás del Santuario del Brezo, cerca de la carretera que va a Guardo.

El sendero conecta pronto con una pista

La nube estaba baja y en lugar de ir hacia las cumbres de la izquierda, en un cruce de pistas donde hay un refugio, cogimos a la derecha
As the low-lying cloud hadn't lifted, we turned away from the peaks to the left and at a crossing of tracks went right

Después de seguir subiendo un poco, bajamos por la pista entre pinares hasta ver este serbal que anunciaba un cambio de paisaje
The track carried on up for a bit before going downhill. The pine plantation gave way to more open vegetation, with this mountain ash standing out.

y en seguida entramos en la aldea supuestamente abandonada de Valsurbio - se está rehabilitando alguna casa
and sure enough, we came upon the supposedly abandoned village of Valsurbio, though one or two houses are being renovated

El nombre del pueblo proviene precisamente del serbal

The village actually takes its name from the Spanish word for rowan ("mountain ash" in my neck of the woods)

Fortunately the cloud had lifted

La Peña del Cueto a la izquierda y el Fraile a la derecha. Esta última es el pico más alto de la sierra (2025m) y hasta ahí nos encaminamos
The Peña del Cueto on the left and the Fraile on the right. The latter is the highest point in the range at just over 2000 metres, and that's where we now headed

Después de llegar al refugio de nuevo, cogimos la pista de en frente, dejándola en seguida para atravesar un pinar en llano. Abajo vimos el embalse de Compuerto
Back at the cross-ways we went south for a few yards before turning off to the right through a pine forest on a flat track. Below to the right a reservoir came into view.

La cresta del Cueto me atrajo sobremanera
Heather lined the track and indeed gives the Sierra its name - we were now going towards the striking Peña del Cueto

La bordeamos para luego ascender el Pico del Fraile
We made our way alongside its slopes, before going up to the left towards the summit of the Pico del Fraile

A la mitad de la subida, las nubes dejaban entrever el Curavacas a la derecha, Peña Prieta en el centro y el Espigüete a la izquierda
Half-way up now, and the clouds had lifted just enough to make out the Curavacas mountain on the right, Peña Prieta in the middle and Espigüete on the left

Desde la cima se ve Peña Cueto a la izquierda y la sierra que continúa hacia el este. Al sur comienza la planicie de Castilla
From the top we can see Peña Cueto to the left and the sierra continuing eastwards. The plains of Castile lie to the south

Quedamos un buen rato arriba, disfrutando del contraste de las vistas entre el norte montañoso y el sur llano, pero por fin tocaba bajar
We spent a good while at the summit contemplating the contrast between the mountainous views to the north and the flat landscape to the south, before heading down again

Hay que recordar dejar la pista para evitar tener que dar una vuelta innecesaria
Unfortunately we forgot to leave the track and take the path, making our walk back longer than necessary.
